Dr. Christine Ricohermoso-Shiaw, PsyD, MPH

On Psychotherapy...

Christine Ricohermoso-Shiaw is a Filipina-American psychotherapist*. She knows that context plays an important role in every individual's life. To help her patients fully, she seeks to understand their situational, personal, and cultural contexts. She takes the time to learn about their past experiences, worldview, past relationships, demographics, and history because she knows those factors inform and impact patients' current life situation and presenting problems.

Christine offers a comfortable, safe, and non-judgmental atmosphere for patients to be honest and authentic.

Christine has a diverse clinical background. She has worked with people of diverse backgrounds. She has a passion for working with first-time therapy-goers, college-age students, older adults, and people of color. Additionally, she specializes in treating depression and anxiety, personal and cultural identity issues, relationship issues, multicultural matters, and family related issues.

Christine’s journey to become a psychotherapist was not traditional. She started her educational career in pediatric medicine, however, discovered her true passion for psychology. Christine holds a degree in Human Biology from the University of California, San Diego; a master’s degree in public health from the University of Southern California; a
master’s degree in psychology from Pepperdine University; and a doctorate in psychology with an emphasis in multicultural psychology from the California School of Professional Psychology at Alliant International University.

On human capacity for change and healing...

“Life can be very hectic. Attending therapy may be challenging because of juggling home and work responsibilities, ill-informed cultural and societal judgements about mental health services, and financial burdens. Often times, people will take care of everyone around them, but rarely put themselves first. Calling The Heights is the first step in putting yourself and your needs first. It is my honor to join you on this journey as you explore your current symptoms.  By using Interpersonal Therapy and Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, together, we will explore your current challenges, gain insight and understanding, and discover ways to become a more genuine, authentic YOU. I will be there with you each step of the way.”
-Christine Ricohermoso-Shiaw, PsyD, MPH

On Teaching...

Christine is passionate about reducing the stigma associated with receiving mental health services on college campuses and in the community at large. She enjoys offering workshops and trainings to provide information, skills, and resources to help improve participants' mental health. She has led workshops on identity exploration and formation; oppression, racism, and discrimination; emotion regulation;
diversity; cultural awareness; self-care; cultivating healthy relationships; and improving emotional intelligence.

In her spare time...

When not practicing psychotherapy, writing, teaching, or lecturing, Christine enjoys laughing, eating, and going on adventures with her family and friends.
